The cyber
attack caused losses, for both businesses and individuals requiring extensive
recovery efforts. It is widely regarded as one of the cyber attacks, in
history.
1. Loss of Data: The worm infected and overwrote files, causing
significant data loss for individuals and businesses. Valuable documents,
photos, and other files were often irretrievably damaged
2. Financial Impact: Numerous
businesses faced setbacks due to disrupted operations costs associated with IT
support and efforts made to retrieve lost data. Estimates indicated that the
global financial impact reached billions of dollars.
3. Email System Interruptions: The
rapid propagation of the virus overwhelmed email servers leading to
sluggishness and disruptions in email communication for organizations.
4. Heightened Security Awareness: This incident underscored the importance of cybersecurity consequently increasing users awareness, about the risks involved in opening attachments or clicking on unfamiliar links.
" The entire concept of the internet was still relatively new in 2000. According to statistics from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a United Nations body, just 28% of Hong Kongers had access to the internet at that time, along with 27% of the United Kingdom, and 15% of France. Even in the United States, where the technology was invented, only some 43% of Americans were getting online.
Two years earlier, Hollywood star Meg Ryan asked “is it infidelity if you’re involved with somebody on email?” as the movie “You’ve Got Mail” introduced people to the idea of cyber-romance — and that email could be used for something other than boring office work."
